iTerm2 - Mac OS Terminal Replacement

Really, the post title says it all. I happened upon this thru vince (http://vccv.posterous.com/) the other day whom I spied using split panes in a terminal session. While the split panes are great on their own (and are a feature I find sorely lacking from the standard terminal app), it's only a small part of the feature set iTerm2 rocks.

Maybe my favorite feature is the ability to call up a persistent terminal session thru a hot-key -- pressing ^-Cmd-T slides down a semi transparent terminal window the width of my screen and a portion of it's hight which upon losing focuses slides back up.

To anyone who has spent time on linux only to move to OS X, this is a must have -- as it is for anyone who's ever only used the standard Terminal app.

RoR openssl fix for Mac

If you're getting a segfault attempting an ssl connection in Rails on OSX Lion such as:

../ruby-1.9.2-head/gems/mail-2.2.19/lib/mail/core_extensions/smtp.rb:14: [BUG] Segmentation fault

add the following to your .bashrc or .zshrc configuration:

export RUBYOPT="-ropenssl"

Really wonky -- especially since ActionMailer depends on Mail thru which I could send emails with ease...

Vacouver, Vancouver, Vancouver!

Can't say enough about this city -- clean, vibrant feel, coupled with Canadian friendliness, and a West Coast outdoor vibe make it a major win.  My only complaint: the horrible transit maps which make navigating the amazing transit network a bumbling affair.

Day 8: we arrive in Vancouver and promptly make way to Stanley Park

Day 9: Baden Powell trail from Deep Cove to Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge (4.5 hours).

Day 10: Spanish Latte followed by a trip by ridiculously-cute-AquaBus to Granville Island

Alaska Adventures: part II

Day 5: Icy Strait Point and our search for Alaskan gold (follow the rainbow!)

Day 6 and 7: A very wet day in Ketchikan preceeded our day of navigating the Inner Passage. Our 4 hours on deck upon entering the Inner Passage netted us sightings of hundreds of dolphins (they would rush to the ships nearby and play in the wake along the bow) and a number of killer whale pods; very cool.

of Boats, and Trains, and Adventures therefrom

Photographic evidence of our time jouneying to, lounging on, and traveling about lands near: a big ass boat.

Days 1 & 2: The Alaska Rail Road and Hubbard Glacier

Day 3: Hiking Juneau's Jumbo (aka: cold, wet, epic hiking in our first temperate rainforest)

Day 4: Playing in Canadian mountain lakes; taking a historical train route back to Skagway
