First off: Hoogerland is a badass; after being crashed out by a media car 2 days earlier and having 33 stitches put in him (him being: his calf, quads, and ass) thanks to an unfriendly encounter with a barbed wire fence during the crash -- he continues to race and hold onto the KOM jersey (King of the Mountains).
Secondly, the series of photos leading up to the finish are really amazing. They chronicle a successful effort by Omega/Pharma to wheedle away Cavendish's leadout team/train by repeatedly launching attacks. Cav's team, bearing the responsibility to cover the attacks (because he's the dominant sprinter/expected stage winner) wear themselves out leaving only Cav and 1 teammate for the finish. Pharma then goes on to challenge him in the sprint and win by a handlebar's width. Awesome work.
People who have never raced rarely show an understanding of just how dangerous this sport is -- sometimes pictures help, but be warned: some are fairly gruesome! To the toughest men in sport -- keep it upright!
Hat tip to D.Brasse.
... more specifically: me, taking in the views atop Mt San Bruno after completing my workout.
"Store owners in Zurich had worried that the closings would mean a drop in business, but that fear has proved unfounded, Mr. Fellmann said, because pedestrian traffic increased 30 to 40 percent where cars were banned."
Sounds counterintuitive -- but I think we'd see the same response here; making pedestrians first class citizens is the best way to attract foot traffic.
Made use of the long 4th of July weekend by backpacking with Sanny and the Tan Brothers in beautiful Emigrant Wilderness.
